Great LinkedIn Channel: In the Hyphen

February 14, 20261 min read

If you’re learning English — especially for business — or you’re interested in US–Mexico culture, I highly recommend checking out Fernando Hurtado’s YouTube channel, “In the Hyphen.”

Fernando is a former NBC/Telemundo journalist who launched the channel last year, and I often encourage my advanced students from Mexico to watch his videos. Why? Because they’re a fantastic way to build real-world, business-related vocabulary while also seeing thoughtful, positive stories about how Mexico is viewed and represented internationally.

In my experience teaching professionals who work across borders, language learning is most powerful when it’s connected to real stories, real companies, and real cultural dynamics. That’s exactly what this channel does.

Every two weeks, Fernando releases highly professional, well-researched videos exploring the space where Mexican and American cultures overlap — in business, society, language, and identity.

Some of my favorites are his features on Mexican companies that have succeeded in the U.S. (and even globally), like Bimbo, Tajín, and Dr. Simi. He also explores interesting cross-border success stories — for example, how Vicks VapoRub, an American brand, has developed an incredibly strong cultural and commercial presence in Mexico.

He also has fascinating episodes on topics like Chicano English, Asian-Black Mexican identity, and the growth of Mexican restaurants in the U.S.

If you’re an American living in Mexico, a Mexican working with U.S. companies, or simply someone curious about the relationship between the two countries, I think you’ll find it both insightful and genuinely useful.

If you’ve watched the channel, I’d love to hear which episode stood out to you. And if there are other creators you follow who thoughtfully explore US–Mexico business and culture, please share them in the comments — I’m always looking for strong recommendations to pass along to my students.
